Dear Sport Software users,

please have a look on my updated web site. For a direct access to the details, click on the links.

Dec 22, 2008
I wish all customers and friends a Merry Christmas
and a good start into the New Year 2009!

SportSoftware V11
The development of the new version 11 is still my main task. I am sure, all of you will be rewarded for your patience when this will be released next year.

Sport Software and SPORTident
SPORTident are continuously improving their hardware. Right now, some special new features are not supported by the current SportSoftware V10.3. However, SPORTident consider it as very important and put great efforts in keeping their hardware compatible to every existing event software. Especially, they appreciate cooperating with me as the developer and vendor of the world wide leading O event software. They are even glad to utilise my experience as the co-developer of the SPORTident system.
This year, I had been repeatedly confronted with the opinion that the SportSoftware V10.3 does not support the current SI hardware. Actually, the SportSoftware works perfectly together with all SI stations and all SI chips which are available for orienteering.
For more details, see the exclusive information for the users below.

SportSoftware and Emit
Also my cooperation with the Emit company couldn't be better, lead by their CEO Sven Marti. For example, this year I received quick and competent support when implementing a special kind of radio control which had been sold in UK (among others). Many thanks go to Ian Marsden (GBR) for his precise tests and comments. Finally he and his club Grampian Orienteers had not only been the initiators of this development but also the first ones who profited from it. In spring, they held the British O championships, which was the very first national championship using the SportSoftware together with Emit!
However, this was not the largest event which had been held using the SportSoftware and Emit. This was FinnSpring (FIN) in May 2008, with an attendance of nearly 4000 competitors on two days (individual and relay). The full scope of Emit hardware had been used there, including radio controls, samlingsboxes and finish line time taking. Jouni Laaksonen (FIN) had been the edp responsible person there. Thanks to Jouni, who had contributed very much to implementing Emit into the SportSoftware.

QuickMap
As usual, here is a report about QuickMap, the O map laser print service.
The numbers of printed maps kept stable during the past years. Last year it were about  7000 A3 and 18000 A4 maps. Among them were many small orders but also some orders of larger events like national championships. Nearly all had been printed on the waterproof Pretex paper.
In addition to German O clubs, my high level, quick and reliable service is preferred by many international customers. On top of the sales report, there are our Western neighbour countries Belgium, Netherlands, Great Britain and France.
Test QuickMap and experience the advantage of this service! For more information, visit the QuickMap web site.

Exclusive information for the users
A bit longer this time...
But it's worth reading... :-)

SportSoftware and SPORTIdent - details
This year, I had been repeatedly confronted with the (wrong) opinion that the current SportSoftware version 10.3 does not support the current SI hardware. The SPORTident company still considers it as very important and puts great efforts in keeping the hardware compatible to every existing event software. Especially, they appreciate cooperating with me as the developer and vendor of the world wide leading O event software. They are even glad to utilise my experience as the co-developer of the SPORTident system.
The SportSoftware V.10.3 works perfectly together with all SI stations up to BS7/8 and all chip types SICard5, 6, 8, 9, which are currently available for orienteering.
There may be problems if the SI master station had been reprogrammed using SIConfig. In most cases, the green LED in the Read chips window will indicate that the station should be ready, but there is no action when a chip is inserted into the station. In this case, verify the station's settings with SIConfig. Activate View - Expert view. Click on Read. Most likely the Extended protocol is activated. Re-program the station without Extended protocol and no Card6 with 192 punches. Then the station will work with the SportSoftware and all SICard types.
I think I know why this problem occurred sometimes: the popup help of SIConfig is not correct in this respect. There it tells you that the extended protocol would be necessary for SICard8, 9. This is not the case! Some users had also been worried by the statement that the stations BS7/8 can't be programmed using SIManager. Actually, exactly the opposite is the case: simply reprogram the master station with SIManager to exactly the same values, and this will automatically deactivate the extended mode and the 192 punches.

SportSoftware and Windows Vista
Of course the SportSoftware works also under Windows Vista. So far, I got sporadic questions about that, to which I replied by email individually. Read a summary for all of you below.
Vista has some restrictions with write protection to the default installation folder (C:\programs\...). Since with SportSoftware V10 you need to write to subfolders because there the events are saved, it will be necessary to install it into another private folder, f.ex. C:\SportSoftware\OE2003.
And of course, you must release the folder..., run CheckPC.... as usual with XP.
Some older Vista installations may also lack of the Winhelp viewer.
To view .hlp files on your Windows Vista computer, you need to download the WinHelp viewer from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6ebcfad9-d3f5-4365-8070-334cd175d4bb&displaylang=en Your PC will need to pass the "Windows Genuine Advantage" validation. The size of the download is a bit over 600 kB. It works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista.
You need to download the WinHelp viewer on your own via the above link. Microsoft prohibits any distribution of the WinHelp viewer other than through their own web site.
Click on the link above and follow the instructions. Don't forget to select the right language version.

A tip regarding voided legs
Some organisers use this function to eliminate a wrongly placed control from the running time. Of course this is not according to the rules and my personal opinion about that is well known and clear: all classes affected must be cancelled... ;-)
But at small events this looks like a suitable solution to save the competition. However, there is one detail to be minded. Assume a class has the legs 32-55-38. C55 had been set out to the wrong place and some runners did not find it at all.
So it looks to be obvious to enter the legs 32-55 and 55-38 into the voided legs for that class. But this has two important drawbacks. First, all runners who did not punch c55 will be mped automatically when downloading. You have to search for them in chip evaluation and to reinstate them manually. Also, those runners do not have any useful split times for both legs because there is no punch time of c55.
There is a better solution possible, which I personally consider as more logical. First you have to delete the c55 from the course definition. After that, don't forget to repeat the code checking! Of course, now 32-38 must be entered as the voided leg. Then all runners will be OK, no matter if they had punched c55 or not. The split times do now show the time from c32 to c38, which is subtracted from the overall time. Runners who did punch c55, will see the punch time with the additional punches and may use it for further analysis.

Version 11 development
As I had announced, version 11 is not just a normal, simple update, but a complete reengineering using mainly new development tools, to make the SportSoftware ready for future requirements. However, for various (also personal) reasons, my progress this year was not as quick as I had expected. But I will not release an incomplete, buggy software (like many larger software companies are doing all the time...). I thank you for your patience!
All of you can now help me a bit. For the V11 distribution and also for my tests, I would need new, up to date demo events of all kinds: single and multi day, relay and score. If you like, send me your event from this year! (Zipped please...) I will then choose several events which should fulfil some well-defined criteria. Roughly said, you must have used all functions of the software in this event (including speaker), so that novice users can learn the most out of it. With respect to the data size, the maximum attendance should be about 800 for one day and relays resp. 500 for multi days. If you had imported the courses from OCAD, please add this import file and the OCAD (ocd) course file.
Those clubs whose event I had chosen, will be donated a free update to the V11 version Pro Large!
What is Pro Large?
According to the wishes of many users, V11 will introduce a new structured license model. This means different license prices based on the max. number of competitors and the included features. There will also be time-limited licenses available. Pro Large is the highest unlimited license which includes all extra features like speaker, finish time taking etc.

As usual...
After some days, please have a look at the page about unknown addresses. Maybe you know somebody on this list. Please contact her/him and ask her/him to tell me if she/he is still interested in receiving the Sport Software News.

Have a good time!

Best regards
Stephan Krämer
